Hello

Has anybody had any experience checking in through the Qantas first class check in area?

I am hoping to maximise time in Qantas first lounge as a platinum. Therefore wondering if the first check in area allows check in earlier than 3hours ahead of departure.

Thanks

I haven't used the First check-in area, but my understanding is that Melbourne Airport as a whole doesn't allow early check-in beyond three hours (or so) for any airline.

Sydney Airport does allow it, so Qantas has all-day check-in there for international flights.

The MEL F checkin is ckosed if there is not a QF flight within 3 hours, which is a fair part of the day. If it is open, you may be allowed to checkin more than 3 hours prior.

I've been at the QF First Class check-in when it was open for other flights but they still would not accept checked luggage until 3 hours before the flight.

That's unfortunate you cannot check in prior to 3 hours. In Sydney I've been checked in 5 hour earlier to enjoy the spa, food, visit other lounges etc without having to worry about time. In Changi with Singapore Air I made a mistake with my departure time and checked in 8 hours earlier. The Private Room makes it easy to overcome such an error. You may want to call Qantas Platinum Service and see what is available as there are conflicting comments posted.

I can't see any conflicting comments?

I've been at the QF MEL First Class check-in a few times recently and the 3-hour rule for checked baggage applied each time. We were only 5 minutes early on one occasion but still had to wait. And I can confirm that the staff told me that the 3-hour restriction was due to MEL airport requirements.

*Possibly* the check-in staff could hold on to your luggage, check it for you at the 3 hours point and then send the baggage receipt up to you in the lounge? But I doubt it.

Def only 3 hours prior if you have checked luggage, they can issue BP's earlier if you have hand luggage only.

I checked in at the F check-in last year, and was about 15 mins earlier than the 3 hours prior mark. No problem with being checked-in and given BPs and baggage receipts.

Maybe it's a crack-down since last year? I've had 2 knock-backs so far this year. Both times it was only minutes to the 3 hours mark. But both times I had to wait those minutes...

I've checked in with Singapore Airlines around 3.5 hours before departure with oversized checked baggage in January this year. I think the official rule is 3 hours but not all carriers seem to enforce it.

Used F check-in in March this year, allowed to check in 3:15 hours before flight departure.

Not sure why they don't open the time up-to 4 hours before check-in. Takes about 1 hour to clear then get to the lounge if you are claiming TAX refund on goods :).

I traveled very recently and whilst the first check in was open for a prior flight I was told I had to wait until the 3 hour window opened up for my flight (about 10 mins).

It should be 4 days !
I've got a flight on Saturday - was hoping to "maximize" time at the airport.
