I think the Regent on Cuscaden Road is perfect for the "drop and flop" type of stopover. It's like a quiet, beautiful cocoon but just a short walk from Orchard and the Botanic Gardens if you're a jogger. It also has a great bar, several restaurants and the John Portman architecture is pretty impressive.
Alternatively, the Sheraton on Scotts Road is not quite as elegant but it does have a terrific pool.
Some good recommendations here, although I'd agree with you, the Swissotel is hard to best - a great hotel in a superb location. Intercontinental Robertson Quay sounds worth checking out but as noted, not super-handy to an MRT station. Pan Pacific is always well regarded but could be outside your budget range. Hotel Jen Orchard Gateway definitely worth a closer look, it's built into the top of a shopping mall so you can be get 100% hermetically-sealed from the searing SIN heat and humidity. It seems less well-known than many of the big name hotels but I know plenty of people who've stayed here and enjoyed it.
I'll second the Hotel Jen Orchard Gateway, currently staying here as i type. The MRT access is great you can take a lift to the station level from the hotel. Rooftop pool is nice with a good view of the city and marina bay. There are quite a few cool bars within a short walk, and a small hawker area with a couple of local places just down the road. Seems quite cheap for what you get, ive paid about $240AUD per night for the standard room.
Four Seasons near Orchard is the best value for money and service .Their renovated rooms are very nice and their quiet location is handy to the Orchard road shopping & dining precint. Mandarin Oriental is a close second with the view to die for but the reception desk could be hit and miss .However the dining staff , the room attendant from the Mandarin Oriental are second to none
Give me the Goodwood Park Hotel any day. This is the second oldest hotel in Singapore behind Raffles and is immaculate. Near to Ion and Takashimaya shopping centres and the MRT. Also not far from the magnificent botanical gardens. Stayed here around 12 times and the quality never ceases to amaze me. They also do great high teas.

Thanks David. Maybe @ausbt could do a comprehensive review of some hotels in Singapore for us given the popularity of the destination? I fully expected to find something when using the search function?
I stayed at the Swissotel at the start of the year, newly renovated and great located I thought. The executive lounge on level 66 has great views of the light show nightly at Marina Bay sands too.
Parkroyal on Pickering or Goodwood Park would be my suggestions. If you choose Goodwood go to the small secondary pool rather than the big one. If you choose the parkroyal and have an inward facing room make sure to close the curtains!
I'd say Conrad Centennial is pretty good. There's a big Suntec City shopping centre directly below the hotel, which I see as a plus in hot and humid Singapore weather. 350m to Esplanade MRT station or 220m to Promenade MRT station (indoor walk, via the shopping centre). Although it's a bit off from the central area (Orchard Road, Little India and Chinatown)

I do like the bar at he Four Seasons. I usually stay at the Hilton but walk through the wierd little arcade that joins the two for a nightcap in there.
The Capital Kempensky has been open for only one year. The rooms are spacious. The bathroom amazing. The hotel immaculately detailed in an old Singaporian building. Only 4 floors. Pool is smallish, gym good. Restaurants and Raffles style bar and wine bar are nice to drink in. Well located on Stamford Rd. Nothing like a new hotel. I will certainly be returning.

Wanting some recommendations please on 4-5 star hotels in Singapore for a 2 day 'drop and flop' after a busy month in Europe. Budget $300-400/night. Have stayed in Singapore many times but seem to always gravitate towards the Swissotel and whilst nice, want to try something different. Great pool area would be welcome and something close to the MRT would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance.
The Swissotel is still the best hotel we've been to in Singapore. Cant recommend any other.

Agreed, the Regent has also got one of the world's best bars (Manhattan).
