Earn double Qantas, Velocity points: Commonwealth Bank credit cards
By whipping out your Commonwealth Bank Awards MasterCard over the coming months you could earn double Qantas or Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer points on your everyday spend.
Just use your Awards MasterCard between December 1 2014 and February 1 2015 and give CBA’s new ‘Lock, Block and Limit’ banking tools a whirl to earn double points on every MasterCard transaction.
It’s as simple as using NetBank to switch off an unneeded feature on your MasterCard, such as international payments or ATM cash advances, which can be done at no charge.
Better yet, a Commonwealth Bank spokeswoman confirmed to Australian Business Traveller that if you’ve already used this feature on your MasterCard – even before the deal began – you’ll automatically earn double points.
Bonus points don’t apply to any transactions made on CBA’s Awards Visa or American Express cards – although if you’ve got one of the following eligible cards, here’s how many Qantas or Velocity frequent flyer points you could now be earning:
Awards, Business Awards, Gold Awards and Business Gold Awards MasterCards: 0.8 points per dollar, up from 0.4
Platinum Awards and Business Platinum Awards MasterCards: One point per dollar, doubled from 0.5
Diamond Awards MasterCard: 1.25 points per dollar, boosted from 0.625
The extra points earned also don’t count towards your annual points cap, and if you don’t want your card to remain locked, you can also disable the security features at any time while still reeling in a cool bounty of points.

So my question is- I have the Diamond mastercard and amex combo, whould I garner more points by using the mastercard over the promo period? Or is this amex still earning more?

Commonwealth Awards points don't equal frequent flyer points – you need to divide by two.
So, you'd earn 1.5 frequent flyer points per dollar on the AMEX and 1.25 on the MasterCard (1.25 Awards points divided by two to get the regular rate of 0.625, and then doubled to 1.25 under the promotion).

Amex still earns more. If no surcharge and the shop accepts AMEX, then still use Amex. But if surcharge is involved (like ATO), then it's up to you to decide if the extra points is worth the money.
