Emirates gives free inflight WiFi to Skywards Platinums, Golds

Emirates will now offer free unlimited inflight Internet to its Platinum and Gold members of its Skywards frequent flyer program, along with discounts for Skywards Silver and Blue passengers.

The new scheme, which kicks off from today, comes less than a month after the airline began charging economy class travellers up to US$15.99 (A$22) to stay connected above the clouds, while making it free for business and first class flyers.

All Skywards Platinum and Gold members on Emirates Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 jets will now have free access to the satellite WiFi service throughout their journey.

Everybody else in economy still has to fork out for inflight Internet once they've used up a free 20MB starter allowance, with an additional 150MB of WiFi costing US$9.99 (A$13.50) and a meatier 500MB priced at US$15.99 (A$22).

However, holding Skywards Blue (entry level) or Silver status will qualify you for these discounted rates:

  • Skywards Silver: 150MB for US$4.99, 500MB for US$7.99
  • Skywards Blue: 150MB for US$6.99, 500MB for US$10.99

Nice to see high level FF's rewarded for a change rather than having benefits cut back or watered down. Well done EK!
