New airline lounges with direct access to boarding gates, airport hotels and an automated people mover connecting domestic and international terminals – that's what Perth Airport is promising for the next decade.
It's part of an ambitious $2bn upgrade which will see all terminals and airlines brought together under a single sprawling roof.
This will include Qantas shifting from today's combined T3/T4 to join what is currently the T1/T2 precinct, which houses Virgin Australia and all other international airlines - finally delivering seamless transfers for Qantas passengers and ending the airline's ongoing stoush with Perth Airport management over which terminals to use for its international flights.
Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown says he is committed to opening its centralised 'aviation hub' no later than 2025, although this will be just the first of two stages.
“The first phase will include three new international gates accessed through the existing terminal building," Brown says.
"It will provide new technological processes such as self-service bag drop; improved board gate facilitation and new retail and food and beverage outlet layouts. There will also be new airline lounges which have better views and are closer to boarding gates."
An all-new domestic terminal will be integrated into the upgraded international terminal and play host to Qantas' domestic flights from 2025.
“The current Terminals 3 and 4 are rapidly reaching their use-by date," Brown says.“ "Qantas have a strong preference for a seamless transition for their passengers between domestic and international flights, and that’s what we are committed to delivering to all air travellers."
The second stage of the project – which the airport says "will be delivered at a future date dependent on passenger growth and airline partner needs" – will include the opening of include airport hotels, a Changi-style shuttle train linking the terminals and a new international pier with direct gate access from some lounges – something which Emirates already does from Perth, Brisbane and Dubai.
“Our aim is to provide smoother movement of passengers from kerbside to flight gate," Brown elaborates. "We’ll be looking at the latest biometrics technology to help create this seamless passenger experience."
In the more foreseeable future, a direct rail link from Perth City to the airport is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2020.

Has anyone else noticed....not a qf tail in sight in the images? Seems EK, VA and SQ are the only airlines that will be operating in the new expanded West Aussie gateway ;-)

The first phase is 3 new international aerobridges. But Qantas is supposed to move in by 2024? I get they can interchangeable like the current VA terminal but this would show a decrease to the number of aerobridges from the current QF domestic terminals. Surely they need more then what they currently have!

Great to hear. However, I notice that there are a large number of planes parked away from the terminal. Will buses be used to transfer passengers to these planes, as all the other gates are full.

The extension beyond the expanded international area does not look sufficient to handle QF's domestic traffic, unless the regional flights move to T2. This would fit with the indicated expansion of T2.

With the expansion of Perth Airport I would like to see Qantas bring back Perth-Hong Kong flights. They got rid of the QF67/68 flights 5 years ago. I would also like to see new routes out of Perth to Auckland, LAX and to Paris.

If Qantas we're to bring a couple of it a320neo orders to the mainline and make them a321neoLRs, then could very easily restart the routes (even though they could do with a standard narrow body, they probably prefer the extra payload).
I'd imagine this would have to happen as apart of making Perth a Major hub for Qantas, which would probably require concessions from the airport and government.

Hopefully the combined brainpower of all those engineers and $ 2 Billion will build a pedestrian overpass/underpass into the terminal. The existing congestion of pedestrians, cars, taxi’s and buses is seriously dumb for a newly upgraded terminal

Perth Airport have been dragged kicking and screaming into doing something, they have been so tardy in spending what is required since they took over, and are now reluctantly making some form of commitment to do the 3rd runway and expand. I don't understand how the Federal Government under the airport lease has allowed them to do as little as possible for so long, and now with the commitment made, look at the timeframe. Qantas are locked into the domestic/QF international terminal for some time and won't move until the required number of gates can accomodate them. Then you have the disconnected terminal 2 that has already been built and not integrated into the so called master plan. Usual WA (wait awhile) half backed cheapskate plan.
