Huawei's MateBook X Pro set for Australian release

Huawei's MateBook X Pro is finally set for Australian release, with the ultra-slim Windows laptop making its down-under debut this Thursday, November 22.

The MateBook X Pro is a sleek challenger to the likes of Dell's XPS 13 and of course the Apple MacBook Air, which is widely considered as Huawei's inspiration for its svelte tapered shape and overall design.

However, unlike the MacBook Air, the MateBook X Pro sensibly pairs its two USB-C ports (one of which is used to power the notebook) with a more conventional USB-A socket.

The 13.9" display extends to the very edges of the panel and sports touchscreen technology coated in toughened smudge-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass, with a clever 'eye comfort mode' to filter our excessive blue light and help reduce eye fatigue.

In a nod to modern privacy concerns, the 1mp webcam has been built into the keyboard and pops up only when needed.

Battery life is on par with its skinniest siblings, at 12 hours for video playback (with a four-speaker Dolby ATMOS sound system) through to 15 hours for less demanding Web browsing, while the fast charger adds a six hour top-up the tank after just 30 minutes sipping from the nearest AC outlet.

All this is shoehorned into a wedge that's just 14.6mm thick and barely nudges the scales at 1.33kg – and for the time being, that wedge will be available only at Sydney's Microsoft Store or online through Microsoft Australia.

Under the aluminium covers (which come in your choice of metallic grey or silver) is Intel's 8th Generation Core powerplant, in mid-range Core i5 and heavy-duty Core i7 variants.

The MateBook X Pro Core i5 model is paired with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid state drive for $1,899; the MateBook X Pro Core i7 version doubles down to 16GB of RAM and 512GB drive and adds Nvidia GeForce  MX150 graphics for $2,599.

The AU Microsoft store also has a pre-order bonus of $200-$300 off before 21 November - makes it a bit more tempting.
