Jetstar has confirmed to Australian Business Traveller that it has two planes in the air carrying passengers on scheduled services to Tokyo.
The city has just been hit by a massive earthquake, registering 8.4 on the richter scale, with a tsunami up to four metres soon after the quake.
Airports in the city including Narita and Haneda have been closed and are being evacuated, with passengers reporting the terminal buildings shaking "like crazy".
Jetstar operations in Australia is now assessing what it will do with the planes it has in the air en route to Japan.
