Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe aims for the 'compact SUV' sweet spot

Choosing the right compact prestige SUV is about to get even tougher as Mercedes-Benz launches its updated GLC Coupe into a super-competitive sector of the premium car market.

Style comes first on the Coupe, which will land here by year's end, and there are very few visual changes to the only serious alternative to the BMW X4 for people who want a smooth-looking SUV.

Following the GLC Wagon – due in Q3 and which for some  families will prove the more practical choice – Mercedes-Benz Australia confirms the non-identical twins are part of a roll-out that tracks back to the C-Class sedan last year.

“It’s a facelift. It’s time for a freshen. Similar to the C Class,” Mercedes-Benz product spokesman, Ryan Lewis, tells Australian Business Traveller. “From a driver’s perspective, there are new-generation engines and the latest infotainment system.”

Benz is not getting into detail yet on pricing or mechanical details, but confirms the Coupe tweak is more than just a once-over to bait its showroom hook.

“It’s much more extensive than a few cosmetic changes. Bringing new drivetrains and 48-volt electrics means there are comprehensive upgrades under the skin.”

The electric improvement points to a significant hybrid presence in the future, but the Coupe line-up will still open with a C200 4Matic with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. There will be two new combustion engines in the range.

Infotainment tweaking means the Coupe will comes with the ‘Hey, Mercedes’ voice-activation system which was first seen - and heard - on Australian roads in the all-new A-Class last year.

Officially called the MBUX Mercedes-Benz User Experience multimedia system, the display screens are an expansive 12.3" for the driver, with a second central display at 10.25".

Also new are a range of upgraded safety system including an exit-warning function that could be a bonus to cyclists facing opening doors, and a trailer manoeuvring system which provides assistance when reversing with a trailer.

Lewis says the changes are a reflection of the improvements on the C Class, with some bonuses that should ensure the Coupe continues its sales leadership in its range.
