Munich Airport's Terminal 2 set for $844 million expansion
Munich Airport will soon be getting a significant expansion of its Terminal 2 facility, largely due to increasing demand at the airport that will see it reach its specified annual traffic capacity of 25 million passengers by next year.
The €650 million ($844 million) project will include the construction of a new satellite building and 52 additional gates, with 27 gates expected to have direct access to Munich Airport via the terminal.
The new satellite building will be connected to Terminal 2 through an underground transport link, and will increase the airport’s capacity to 36 million passengers annually.
The project is a joint undertaking between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. The German carrier is expected to stump up 40% of the investment with Munich Airport providing the remainder of the funding.
While construction is yet to begin, all plans for the expansion have received final approval and it is estimated that the facility could go into service by 2015.
