Sydney International Airport to get new four-star Rydges Hotel
Hotel group Rydges is building a new hotel for Sydney Airport, located within the airport precinct at the international terminal.
Construction is about to begin on the hotel, which will be located behind the car park at the international terminal and will open in late 2012.
The Rydges Sydney Airport will pack 317 rooms, plus the obligatory bar, restaurant and gym into the hotel's $68 million price tag. We also hope the hotel will embrace some traveller-friendly options such as very flexible check-in hours and short-term room rates.
The choice of additional accommodation at Sydney airport will be welcome news for travellers, doubly so because this hotel will be located inside the airport zone itself.
One of the problems with Sydney airport hotels at the moment is persuading a taxi driver to accept a short fare or standing out in the elements waiting for the irregular shuttle bus.
So a convenient option for a bit of shut-eye after an overnight redeye or before an early morning departure is great news.
While the hotel's being built, keep an eye out for changes around the international terminal. "During construction, there will inevitably be temporary disruptions to normal operations at Sydney Airport" an airport statement reads. "Sydney Airport wishes to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused."

Also looks like a few hundred parking spots in the short term carpark have/will be lost... I imagine this is a very welcome addition though. It's pretty ridiculous that Sydney doesn't already have an airport hotel walking distance from the terminal itself.

Is this Australia's first REAL airport hotel, walking distance from the terminal, just like airport hotels at Singapore Changi, HK, Heathrow etc? Excellent idea but I don't see any covered moving walkway in this photo, they need that so that passengers can easily get form the airport to the hotel with minimum of fuss.

Nope. Melbourne has the Parkroyal and the Holiday Inn, at the very least, which are both walkable from the terminal (the HI less so if you have luggage).

There could easily be a covered walkway connecting to the short term carpark into the back side of the hotel, which has quite a major concourse and travelators straight into the arrivals and departures areas.
There's also the potential access from the covered walkway in the old area of the carpark, which ends just behind the hotel...
