Sézanne Tokyo named Asia’s best restaurant; here’s the full 2024 list
It was a good year to eat in Bangkok and Tokyo, according to the Asia’s 50 Best awards.
Discovering which are the best restaurants in town can at times be a labyrinthe of opinions; poring over review sites or seeking advice from friends. Alternatively, you can simply follow the 50 Best Restaurant awards – for which the list of Asia’s top restaurants has just been revealed.
At the top of the leaderboard is Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Maranouchi’s neo-French favourite Sézanne. It rises from last year’s second place, with reviewers praising its fresh take on French classics, backed by an extensive Champagne menu.
Helmed by British chef Daniel Calvert, its menu spans the likes of duck confit and foie gras, venison paired with sweet potato from Kagoshima, and a burrata cheese with the tangy sweetness of strawberries.
Sézanne is one of four Tokyo establishments making the cut, with it narrowly beating second place winner Florilège, where innovative French-Japanese cuisine is plated up along a single, communal table alongside the cooking station.
Third and fourth place go to Gaggan Anand Bangkok – which seeks to change perceptions of Indian cuisine with its cutting-edge technique – and The Chairman Hong Kong, respectively. Fellow Hong Kong establishment Wing rounds out the top five.
William Drew, Director of Content at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, hails this year’s list as “truly uplifting” citing the “rich array of exceptional dining establishments spanning 19 cities in Asia, including eight exciting newcomers.”
Drew adds special acknowledgement of the Sézanne team, noting the “impeccable cuisine, hospitality and innovative approach has resulted in the restaurant becoming a must-visit destination.”
The 2024 Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants was unveiled in a live awards ceremony at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, Seoul – a city which is no stranger to culinary excellence, with four venues making the cut on this year’s list.
As with its global counterpart, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, winners are judged by a panel of over 300 industry leaders, with Asia divided into six regions – India & Subcontinent, mainland China & Korea, Japan et all – to ensure each is represented as fairly as possible.
