Free flights, points and PJs in Virgin’s vaccination push

Virgin Australia's fully-vaccinated frequent flyers can win anything from one million Velocity points to a pair of business class pyjamas in today's launch of the airline's vaccination incentive scheme.

The full prize pool, which Virgin says is worth over $150,000, runs out as follows:

  • one million Velocity points
  • 50 return economy flights with Virgin Australia
  • 25 return business class flights with Virgin Australia
  • 30  Virgin Australia lounge memberships
  • 10 x 100,000 Velocity Points
  • 50 x 10,000 Velocity Points
  • 85 pairs of Virgin Australia PJs

However, unlike Qantas' vaccination rewards program, Virgin's VA-X & Win promotion doesn't take the 'every player wins a prize' approach.

In Qantas' rival scheme, every fully-vaccinated Australian member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program can choose between 1,000 Qantas Points, 15 status credits or a $20 discount on a Qantas or Jetstar flight.

On top of this, they’ll go into the draw for one of eight major prizes of $50,000 in Qantas travel vouchers, one million Accor Live Limitless (ALL) points for booking hotels and resorts, and some $3,650 in BP fuel.

"Vaccination is our way back to the things we love and the people we miss, and most importantly, it's the only way we can protect the lives and livelihoods of all Australians," espouses Virgin Australia CEO Jayne Hrdlicka.

"We are all in this together and the sooner we are vaccinated to the thresholds required by government, the sooner we can return to a quality way of life that includes travelling freely within our own country and abroad."

Copying stuff like this seems sensible to me!

Pretty sure all this was announced ages ago it was just a matter of when going live, and Qantas went live last week it's not as if Virgin saw this and then copied a week later. Classic key board warrior misinformation at its best!

No. Qantas announced a long time ago it would be running a vaccination competition, but didn't flesh out a lot of the details. Some time after that, Virgin announced it would also be running a vaccination competition.

Last week Qantas announced the full details of its vaccination competition and launched the scheme, and today Virgin has announced the full details of its own vaccination competition and launched this.

LOL what about what Qantas has copied from Virgin, I'd be cautious making comments like that online.

Oh dear - mid PANDEMIC and apparently set companies have rights over the way forward - how backwards an opinion could one have.

I couldn't agree more!

Sure, anyone can make this the same old 'Qantas vs Virgin' contest if they are so inclined... but I would rather focus on the fact that both airlines are actively rewarding and encouraging vaccinations so that we can get flying again. Surely we can all agree this is A Good Thing? :)

More interested in what's going on with Virgin flying international, and what the partnership with SQ will look like in December and on into 2022

I don't expect Virgin to be flying long-range international (eg LAX, Asia) for quite some time, but I'd expect some announcement on its international partnerships (including Singapore Airlines) before long.

I wonder if they will join an alliance?  I know some people think it's a waste of money but as a OneWorld slave I do everything possible only fly on one of the alliance partner airlines at all times :)
