The Hilton Honors loyalty program will reset its status requirements to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, but high-ranking Diamond members will enjoy one last chance to retain their prized perks for another 12 months.

Due to launch in January 2023, the Diamond Status Extension will allow “eligible Diamond members” to stay minted through to 2024.

“Eligible Diamond members will be able to request a one-time extension to prolong their status through the Hilton Honors Diamond Status Extension, which becomes available in January,” Sarah Somerville, Hilton’s Senior Director Loyalty and Partnerships for the Asia-Pacific region, tells Executive Traveller.

While those eligibility criteria are yet to be revealed, when Hilton Honors rolled out a similar one-time Diamond Status Extension in 2017, the criteria included a total of three years at Diamond status (those years did not have to be consecutive) with paid or reward stays of at least 250 nights or an earning of more than 500,000 Base Points over the lifetime of their Hilton Honors membership.

That Diamond-coated parachute aside, 2023 will see Hilton Honors “return to its pre-pandemic tier status requirements”, Somerville confirmed.

For Hilton Honors Silver, the tier qualification will be 10 nights, 4 stays or 25,000 Base Points; for Gold the goal is 40 Nights, 20 stays, or 75,000 Base Points; and for Diamond it’s 60 nights, 30 stays, or 120,000 Base Points.

(Between now and December 31, 2022, members can earn double nights which contribute toward elite status qualification, milestone bonuses and rollover nights under the Hilton Honors Double Night Credit promotion.)

Also on the cards for 2023, Somerville says,”Hilton Honors will also extend Points expiration to 24 months, up from 15 months currently.”

Hilton was the first hotel group to offer a status extension when the pandemic took hold in March 2020, with Hilton Honors Silver, Gold and Diamond members gifted an additional year at the same tier without staying a single night at any Hilton property.

Additional status extensions and relaxed elite requirements followed, along with freezes on the expiry of Hilton Honors points, reflecting the ongoing challenges for many travellers even as countries began to reopen and business and leisure travel started to rebound.

Don’t forget that Hilton Honors offers an ongoing status match against competing programs including Accor ALL, IHG One Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt – read our Hilton Honors status match guide for all the details.

Hilton are to be commended for the way they treat their loyalty members. I will not easily forget the way Hilton got on the front foot and refunded who couldn't travel due to COVID disruptions and then extended status well in advance in both 2020 and 2021. In return, I have already stayed 61 nights (and counting) at Hilton properties this year, and I've had generally excellent loyalty experiences everywhere I have stayed. In contrast, Accor have been absolutely hopeless and thus I've given them the boot and stayed just a solitary night in 2022 and have no plans to stay at Accor properties in 2023.

Good on Hilton!  The best! Free brekkie for Golds and Diamonds, as well as premium wifi.  Frightened I was going to go back to Gold after Diamond for many years.  Even as Gold, if you stay regularly eg Waldorf Jersusalem Hilton Tel Aviv, Hilton FRAPort  Hilton SYD, DoubleTree PERth, Hilton Perth , DoubleTree Melbourne  ,Waldorf Berlin, Hilton Berlin, you are always wel llooked after with gratis suite upgrades.  And as COVID struck, my several thousands $ booking at Hilton Tel Aviv was graciously refunded directly by Israeli staff, after a quick phone call, but I am a regular., without question for an almost 2 week stay, as were my Qatar and American Airlines Points for Qatar Airways First.  Singapore Air finally decided to refund me my Israel-EU-EU Swiss Biz  reward tickets through SQ, and Swiss for an paid Eco 55 minute flight from Milano Malpensa wouldn't refund me until I raised multiple times with Amex, then Schwitz finally conceded, and refunded.  I've received superb upgrades at Ritz Carlton PER during COVID, and can't fault Marriott either, as wel las multiple programs to transfer to.  But ALL in ALL (pun intended!)  HILTON RULES, AS USUAL.  Many many THX to Hilton  for this additional extension for we Diamonds.
