Lufthansa Technik’s lavish Boeing 777-9 concept is for VIPs only

Bespoke airline interiors are nothing new for those who can afford to fly them. Oil barons and CEOs of multinational corporations; Beyoncé and Jay-Z. But every now and then a design comes along which deserves a double-take.

Singapore Airlines First Class designer Jacques Pierrejean’s ‘Parisian apartment in the sky’ for one, or the radical ‘Explorer VIP A330’ from Lufthansa Technik – replete with invisible ceiling, foldout balcony and peekaboo storage for keeping an eye on your precious cargo.

Lufthansa Technik has now debuted yet another high flying concept, this time for the Boeing 777-9, which is set for delivery from 2025. Emirates has the largest order for the next-gen jet in place, though Qatar Airways will be first to receive it.

Arabic-inspired design echoes throughout the aircraft.

Crowds at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva got a first look at the German design firm’s latest concept earlier this week, with the fresh approach taking full advantage of all available space.

Given the level of interest from Middle Eastern carriers for the 777x, it’s no surprise Lufthansa has its sights on buyers from the Arabian Peninsula, with interiors – inspired by the distinct architecture of the region – incorporating large ‘majlis’, or sitting rooms, and geometric design features.

The bar area is designed to be the social hub of the aircraft.

The rear of the aircraft is traditional seating for the wider entourage, including a mix of business and economy-like seats, while the middle houses six private sleeping booths with a full-length bed and separate chair. It’s a similar approach to Qantas’ new A350 First Class.

Moving forward, things get more exciting, as the heart of the 777 opens up to reveal a large meeting and dining table flanked by leather armchairs. Comfy lounges and a glittering, golden bar round out the space. And at the front, a private office, followed by a spacious master bedroom and ensuite.

Is that a Sydney Opera House-inspired window panel we see?

A special light and window shade concept has also been implemented in the cabin, which designers describe as giving passengers “the feeling of being in their personal living room”.

Jan Grube, Sales Director in VIP & Special Mission Aircraft Services at Lufthansa Technik, says the team’s mission was to create “a cabin that is both functional and beautiful, while also meeting the unique needs of our VIP clients in the Middle East.”

The dining area doubles as an excellent meeting room.

This cabin design is the first of its kind to be developed using native aircraft data provided by Boeing, which means dimensions and space shown in the layout are 100% accurate.
