Qantas extends advanced checkin for New Zealand flights

Qantas is extending its advanced self-serve check-in system to include checked luggage for trans-Tasman travellers.

The system, which Qantas calls Smarter Faster Checkin, has previously been limited to passengers with only carry-on bags, but trials now underway at Sydney International Airport have introduced a bag drop counter for selected flights to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.

However, there's no support for the Q Bag Tags used on Qantas' domestic Smarter Faster Checkin network.

In addition, anybody with the new smartchipped Qantas Card can use the tap-and-go checkin towers – a facility previously restricted to frequent flyers holding Silver status or higher.

The terminals issue a boarding pass which can also double as your ticket to the express path for customs and security, provided your travel class or frequent flyer status qualifies you for the fast lane treatment.

Note that unlike the domestic Smarter Faster Checkin service you won't receive an SMS with your flight details.

The service sans bag drop continues to be available for all direct Qantas flights between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown, having been rolled out in its original form in late 2011.

Nice to see that these innovations continue to get improved and rolled out.

It was a gamble, but unlike a number of QF's other gambles, this was a winning pick.

I hope the full system goes live on Trans Tasman soon. Domestic flying is already a breeze.
