Qantas Frequent Flyer deal: buy gift vouchers, rake in the points

If you fly Qantas and collect Frequent Flyer points — or if you're looking for the perfect present for a travelling colleague, client or friend — the Red Roo's annual gift voucher sale is back!

For buying each voucher you rake in an impressive ten points per dollar, which is a pretty good earning rate.

And whoever uses the voucher to take a flight still receives the usual amount of points.

Best of all, you can use the voucher yourself — it doesn't have to be given to somebody else. So you can effectively 'double dip' on the points, earning one lot for buying your voucher and another for using it.

(Purchase the voucher with a Qantas Frequent Flyer credit card and you'll also earn points for using the plastic, so this is a triple dip!)

Vouchers come in fifty dollar increments between $50 and $500.

You can only redeem one voucher per booking, which limits you to a maximum of $500 per flight. But that's still up to 5,000 Qantas points just for the effort of buying the voucher — a good deal in anyone's book — and there's no limit to the vouchers you can buy.

They're good for a full 12 months from the date of purchase and if there's unused credit remaining on your voucher after it's redeemed, Qantas will issue you a new voucher for the balance.

Qantas says you can use the vouchers "on full advertised eligible fares, including fees, taxes and carrier charges."

That makes them a points-lucrative way to pay for the taxes, fees and annoying little surcharges on your frequent flyer ticket redemptions. You also escape credit card fees for booking with a voucher.

The vouchers can be personalised and are delivered to your email inbox, so hop to it if there's someone on your present list and you've missed: the sale is only on through December 27.

Do make sure you have a full read of the voucher terms and conditions, though — there are a few things that might catch out the unawares traveller.
