Singapore Airlines: "There was no fire" on A380

Singapore Airlines:

Yesterday, Singapore Airlines confirmed to Australian Business Traveller that fire extinguishers had been deployed after wiring started smoking in an A380 cargo hold mid-flight.

Today, it's a slightly different story: SIA does not want to talk about burned wiring. And there was no fire, the airline says, just a precautionary activation of the fire extinguishers in the hold.

Here's today's and yesterday's statements for comparison, with differences in italics:

Today's statement:

"The crew of a Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 operating to Singapore from Hong Kong on 31 January reported smells of smoke in a lavatory while the aircraft was on its descent. There was no fire, although as a precaution a halon extinguisher was discharged by the crew. The aircraft landed without incident at Singapore. Singapore Airlines and Airbus are currently carrying out an investigation."

Yesterday:

"The crew of a Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 operating to Singapore from Hong Kong on 31 January reported smells of smoke in a lavatory while the aircraft was on its descent. As a precaution a halon extinguisher was discharged by the crew. The aircraft landed without incident at Singapore. Ground crews later found signs of burns to electrical wiring in the forward cargo hold. Singapore Airlines and Airbus are currently carrying out an investigation."

Today's statement gets "there was no fire" and loses "ground crews later found signs of burns to electrical wiring in the forward cargo hold."

Given the first official statement from the company said burned wiring was found in the hold, but this was removed from the updated statement today, Australian Business Traveller has asked Singapore Airlines to clarify whether or not burned wiring was indeed found.

UPDATE: Singapore Airlines has now responded: "The statement regarding the wiring is accurate and ground crews found signs of burns to electrical wiring in the forward cargo hold." Another spokesperson further added that the omission of the the mention of burned wiring in its revised statement was an inadvertant omission and simply a cut-and-paste error.
