Uber Select chauffeur service launches in Brisbane, Gold Coast

Uber riders in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast can now dial-up a luxury vehicle at below-taxi prices through ‘Uber Select’: a new option available in the Uber smartphone app.

Marketed as being a step above the standard UberX offering – the company’s low-cost ridesharing option – but ranked below the traditional Uber Black service, Uber Select draws on high-rating UberX drivers with mid-range to high-end cars.

Included on that list: everything from higher model Ford, Holden and Hyundai vehicles right through to drivers with an Audi, Jaguar, Lexus or BMW 3-Series.

Queensland’s top Uber users will automatically see Uber Select in the Uber app…

… while entering the promo code ‘UBERSELECTACCESS’ will also unlock the option.

Using estimates provided by Uber, the cost of a regular taxi between Brisbane Airport and the city’s CBD is typically around the $36 mark plus tolls, or $39.96 if paying the same by EFTPOS or credit card owing to the exorbitant 11% fee (10% + GST) levied by taxi industry body Cabcharge.

The same journey on Uber Select would cost roughly $33 plus tolls but with no credit card payment fees – including for American Express and Diners Club – while the existing UberX service costs around $24.

New to Uber? You can sign up for free using the special Australian Business Traveller invitation link and get $10 off your first ride.

(Disclaimer: we’ll also pick up a free $10 ride when you take your first Uber journey, so it’s a win-win.)

Start by creating your free personal account at uber.com, download the Uber app for your iPhone or Android smartphone, and you're ready to ride in style.

Nice to have the option to pay a little extra for something a little better, that's for sure! Has always been annoying to have Black here in Melbourne but only X up in Brisbane...

I saw the fleet list for Uber Select in the US. Drivers have to have one of a number of specific models which includes, for example, a list of acceptable BMWs and Acuras, and a rather hopeful note that any model of Rolls-Royce or Bentley would also be acceptable.

Problematically, the allowed cars include things like the Audi A3, which is an awfully squeezy way to get around town. I'd much rather take the Camry, thanks.

Hi Hugo, for Uber Select in Brisbane we've received word that the Audi A3 would be excluded – allowable Audis include the A4, A5, A6, A8, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

I hate to say this but things the size of the Audi A3 are becoming the normality now.I am not from Brisbane or the Gold Coast but in Adelaide you in the taxi's see things like Skoda Octavia or Nissan Pulsar on the fleet these days.I guess with the winding down of local manufacturing plus those things being close to the size of a first generation Commodore It was bound to happen
