Virgin Atlantic looks for codeshare on Virgin Australia's HKG flights
Virgin Atlantic could plant a virtual foot back into the Australian market under a codeshare agreement on Virgin Australia's Hong Kong flights.
The Branson-backed British airline left the local skies in May 2014 when it pulled the plug on Sydney-Hong Kong flights.
However, an application made by Virgin Australia to Australia's International Air Services Commission "to permit Virgin Atlantic to code share on Virgin Australia services on the Hong Kong route."
Virgin Australia launched flights between Melbourne and Hong Kong in mid-2017 and is now eyeing Sydney or Brisbane for an additional Hong Kong route by the end of 2018.
If approved, the codeshare agreement would allow Virgin Atlantic passengers to make a single booking to travel from London to Hong Kong to Australia. This could also see Virgin Australia passengers able to book codeshare travel on Virgin Atlantic's Hong Kong to London Boeing 787.

Hi David. On a related matter do you know if VA and VS will check baggage to final destinations. I know they have interline agreements. We have VS upper classes booked HKG -LHR using flying club points. We have to book Mel-HKG. If they do we would probably take the VA option.

I think you will be fine. Sabre shows as both having a baggage agreement.

This would be very good for both airlines (particularly VA), and provide some extra competition to BA/QF/CX. I hope it gets approved... indeed I'd be surprised if it isn't approved.

Thanks mdart86. Couldn't help ourselves. We booked for November 18 and had no issues getting 2 return seats in upper class on our choice of days.

We flew a VS/VA combo flight to LHR and bags were checked through and boarding passes issued for all sectors. Great way to get to LHR as well (especially if travelling up front!).

It looks like VA have minimal codeshare agreements allowing onward travel from HKG.
