Virgin Australia: direct flights between Adelaide & Alice Springs

Virgin Australia will kick off flights from Adelaide to Alice Springs in March 2015 and is also planning a new regional lounge in the Red Centre for business class passengers plus Velocity Gold and Platinum members.

Services will run three times per week on a Boeing 737-800, with eight seats at the pointy end, 168 seats in economy and free wireless inflight entertainment for all guests.

"The Adelaide to Alice Springs route has effectively been a monopoly for nearly a decade and Virgin Australia is delighted to bring choice and competition to these cities," said Virgin Australia Chief Commercial Officer Judith Crompton.

"Today’s announcement is another step forward in our strategy to become Australia’s favourite airline group as we continue to redefine domestic air travel in Australia for both business and leisure travellers."

As with other Virgin Australia flights, Velocity Frequent Flyer members will earn status credits and Velocity points on the new route, while VA’s Adelaide lounge is open to eligible travellers leaving the South Australian capital.

Tickets will go on sale by early 2015, with Virgin Australia also commencing flights between Alice Springs and Darwin in the same month.

Wow! Did not see that coming, I hope they start flying from Brisbane to Alice soon. A weekly QantasLink flight is not at all usefull!

Wow, a Virgin Lounge in Alice Springs before Hobart? What's going on with the delay after delay after delay when it comes to the Hobart lounge? It's been postponed indefintely now, there must be a valid reason for this surely?

There is. Look at HBA, consider where a lounge could be built without major capex, and also who they have to rent the space from.

You're right. It's just annoying that Borghetti was down in Hobart maybe four years ago now sprouting the benefits a new Hobart lounge would have for the local market. Then it was delayed. Then it was delayed again and now it's been taken off the agenda completely.

I highly doubt it.

Hobart desperately needs a VA lounge.

About time too for the South Australians.Apart from Qantas the only other choice is spending close to a full day on Bus or Train to get there currently.19 Hours on Greyhound is nobodys idea of fun.

Hopefully they time the flights so that they can connect with the flights from ASP to DRW.
