American Express Centurion Lounge to open at New York's JFK Airport

New York’s JFK Airport is finally getting an American Express Centurion Lounge, and it’ll be the largest in the elite AMEX lounge network.

Split across two levels with a footprint of almost 1,400m² the new Centurion Lounge is slated to open at JFK Terminal 4 in early 2019 and will feature extensive airfield views through two decks of floor-to-ceiling windows and “one-of-a-kind design elements”, according to American Express.

High flyers can expect the usual premium food and drinks menus, well-appointed shower suites and dedicated workspaces.

“We choose locations to open our Centurion Lounges based on where we see our Platinum Card Members traveling most and JFK is one of the top airports these Card Members travel through,” said Josh McKay, AMEX vice president and general manager for Global Benefits and Services.

Airlines based in T4 include Virgin Australia partner Delta, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Swiss, Asiana and China Southern.

Centurion Lounges are reserved for passengers holding the card company’s most exclusive cards, including the American Express Platinum Charge Card, Business Platinum Card or Corporate Platinum Card issued directly by AMEX in any country, including Australia – or of course the namesake and invitation-only Centurion Card.

American Express opened its Hong Kong Centurion Lounge in late 2017, while a more mainstream American Express Lounge will open at Melbourne Airport's T2 international terminal in the coming months.

Terminal 4 - great for those whose penchant is SkyTeam and EK. Not so great if you're a oneworld or Star Alliance member. One wonders if AMEX eventually has plans to open further JFK lounges to accommodate top-tier flyers of alliances other than SkyTeam. I'd bet that OW pax, at least, would be a lucrative source of premium AMEX cards - and the trek between terminals at JFK isn't exactly easy nor seamless.
