IN BRIEF | US Airways awards booked using British Airways points now come with fuel surcharges, thanks to the way that the airline is now calculating its fares.
US Airways, which has traditionally built any fuel surcharge into the base price, has now split this out into a separate component.
While not impacting the overall cost for revenue passengers, a traveller must pay any separate taxes and surcharges when redeeming ‘Avios’ (points) through British Airways’ Executive Club – including fuel surcharges.
It’s a sneaky move, and one that allows US Airways to collect a higher cash payment on award tickets.
Fuel surcharges don’t apply on domestic flights, although international sectors take quite a beating. One-way Philadelphia to Paris flights now see US$428 added to the co-pay, which now totals $452.50.
