Absolutely, they've said as much, but also they have their eye on Europe and North America as well.

Keep existing routes but use smaller long haul planes.

If reaching 80% load factor is a problem on the B747-400s, then use A330-200s. At least Qantas International still have flights that can be filled.

Bring back routes such as San Francisco, build codeshare networks with Oneworld Alliances abroad by feeding direct flights to their hub.

Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Helsinki, Berlin, London, Dallas Fort-Worth, Amman, Madrid are all hubs of Oneworld Alliance members. If Helsinki is too far, meet them halfway in Singapore or Bangkok or Hong Kong and feed Qantas passengers in. What's the point in being part of an alliance and not using them? At least Qantas International can continue to make money by profit sharing.

What makes a person want to fly Qantas anyway? the A380? the fact that they have a Qantas FF card?

Unlike in the domestic market, there are dozens of airlines to chose from when flying internationally from Australia. I would much rather go to London with Etihad, Qatar, Singapore Air or emirates rather than with Qantas.

As sagidec says they need to go to the hubs of a few of their oneworld partners and then let their partners do the rest from there. An airline needs to be seen as unique and then it can do great things.

Yeah thats right, I also think they need to have more international routes from melbourne, brisbane and perth because they lack the international routes. This could help qantas  a little by gaining marker share back

Yeah your right. But i am wondering, will that be what makes people want to fly with them? more routes?

Do you think they will have to do something else to really set them apart and give people a good excuse to fly with them?!

I would fly with Qantas if they have competitive prices with their rivals (not more expensive), exceeding in-flight customer service like Asian airlines, large network and changeovers to reach destinations are as minimal as possible.

I fly to Kuala Lumpur yearly but they do not have direct flights, nor good connection times. Flight to Singapore arrives between 9pm and 11pm which means I have to spend the night in Singapore Changi Airport. Hence, I do not fly with them for this route. Departure time out of Sydney to Asia could do better than after 4pm everyday from Sydney.

So what they need is:

  1. Better more convenient flight times
  2. Better customer service
  3. To make Kuala Lumpur an asian hub
  4. More competitive prices
  5. more international routes

any what else?

Maybe a better inflight product or just update the aircraft so they all are like the A380 comfort

Then again the A380 comfort isnt all that wonderful by comparision to say Singapore Air or any of the other carriers

Thats true its the best they have though, I do think if they improved the standards of the products and have the same consitancy in the products as well it might help a bit in attractiving more customers to fly with tme

Yeah i agree because the idea of a window seat where you have to do a hurdle over a passenger lying flat is a totally weird one. They should dive into some real new stuff... like really futuristic stuff that no airline has yet gone near. They could really go to town to make themselves superior and ahead.

A better reason to why Qantas should select Kuala Lumpur as a hub is because they don't have curfew on flight arrivals and departure.

As much as I appreciate some peace and quiet at night, for the greater economy, I would like Sydney Airport to be 24 hours operation.
