In the Qantas FF membership once you have accumulated the required status credits to move to the next tier when does the 12 month period to retain that tier begin?Â
Eg: My joining anniversary date is June but will reach Silver by March.

It's the anniversary of you joining. In your case you'll have Gold for March-June 2018, plus an additional year through to June 2019 at which point you'll drop back down unless you've earned enough status credits.

The period in which to earn the credits to retain would be July 2018 to June 2019. So if you get Silver in March unless you can get to Gold before the end of June 2018 you'd be better postponing discretionary travel till July 2018 onwards to work on retaining Silver.
However whilst Silver gets some benefits it's not a lot. Gold/Platinum is the sweet spot.

What are the specific perks that make Gold the sweet spot? Hopefully I will be able to use the Double Status Credits sale for all travel I need to do after July 2018 and should reach Gold by November, which is when I will have a few international flights to undertake.

Silver just gives some check in and boarding priority, and a small extra baggage allowance. Gold gets more priority and baggage then Silver and access to domestic Qantas Clubs/International business lounges. Platinum gets domestic business lounge/international First lounge access. With Gold/Platinum also getting access to the matching lounge level of oneworld members. ie, QF Platinum gives access to JL, BA, CX, etc F lounges.
