Quite simple really, its called a monopoly. The beauty of a monopoly is you can do what you want to maximise you profit. Common sense does not come into it. Given the massive parking profits again this year, blind Freddie could have predicted, why are we surprised at Perth Airport doing anything other than maximising its profits and a lame government sitting back and letting it happen.

but how does making PER an unattractive option maximise their profit? If the flight doesn't go there then no-one can use it. Surely more services to more destinations will make the airport more money, and lead to the Qantas terminal relocation happening even sooner.
News toady that Qantas has canned any additional international routes eg Perth to South Africa from T3
For many years Perth airport management have been playing property developer for it surrounding land, and seemed to have left expansions and improvements to T1 on the backburner to long.
If Qantas are allowed to do this from Terminal 3, as a seasonal service only it may lead to the SAA daily service being withdrawn as uneconomical. Qantas don't expect to operate all their flights from the same Terminal in Sydney so why should they do so in Perth? It is time for Qantas to move to the Terminal 1 & 2 consolidated Terminal area as soon as possible.
The Qantas Terminals 3 & 4 are very substandard compared to the Terminal 1 Virgin Australia Domestic Pier and International Terminal. The Virgin Terminal is world class and the Qantas Terminal is a joke.

Qantas would obviously have a difficult time expanding their presence in Perth if they had to move to T1 as it is. Until PAPL complete their expansion process (rumoured to be at least 5 years from completion) QF simply have no room for growth at T1.
The lounges in T3/4 are superb (better than anything you’ll find in T1 imo) and while the building itself is old it remains far more functional to have all their flights operating out of the same terminal. With rumoured upgrades to double aerobridges in play for the QF side, the operational side of the terminal will be far superior than the lackluster T1 international.
To the naysayers who cite the East Coast airport layouts as examples it’s worth pointing that in just about every other first world country most airlines operate domestic and international services out of the same terminals!

That's the problem, the new terminal won't be ready for them for another 5 years. Perth customers want more international options, especially QF customers, and for those flights to viable for QF they need connect with (and continue on as) domestic services.
Perth Airport should just get on with building the new terminal.
Good on Alan Joyce for pushing back against PER. The airport has agreed to let Qantas fly internationally from T3/T4 and any expansion of Qantas' PER network has got to be good news for Perth.

Why is anyone even holding up SYD's terminals being on opposite sides of the airfield as a good example of anything? It's hideous, especially given only QF passengers qualify for the good transfer bus (which I will admit is enormous fun for my inner child). It's so disruptive that SYD's operator wants to move towards dual-use terminals to improve the passenger experience (translation: maximise time spent captive to overpriced shopping and dining).
At least BNE has a layout that can be eventually consolidated into a continuous SIN-style horseshoe configuration in concert with the new parallel runway.

The media coverage has all gone very quiet, has anyone heard any news? I am being selfish in asking as I'd like to take the kids on holiday to Africa next year, and love to use my QF points, but if there is no direct QF service I'll pay for SAA flights.
