The five-star Kimpton Margot Sydney hotel is now open

There’s a fresh five-star hotel to sample on your next trip to Sydney, with the debut of the Kimpton Margot Sydney – the luxury boutique hotel brand of the IHG family, and Australia’s first-ever Kimpton.

Housed in a magnificent heritage-listed Art Deco building on the corner of Pitt and Bathurst Streets, in the middle of the CBD and a leisurely stroll from Hyde Park and Pitt Street Mall, the Kimpton Margot Sydney features 172 rooms and suites.

The heritage site was formerly known as Primus Hotel Sydney and, decades before that, the Sydney Water Board building; after being sold in early 2021 for $132 million, the property has undergone a full renovation.

What's in a name?

Kimpton says the name ‘Margot’ was chosen as a tribute to the artistic women of influence that played a leading role in shaping Australia’s design scene in the 1930s.

Kimpton Sydney’s room decor consists largely of a juxtaposed combination of dark and bright furnishings with beige bedding and a rich brown mahogany desk. Most rooms will offer separate bathtubs and showers, while suite guests enjoy separate living areas on higher floors.

Higher still, Kimpton’s Celebrity Suite offers 160 square metres with a walk-in wardrobe and butler’s kitchen. All rooms come with Mr Smith bathroom amenities. And like other Kimptons around the world, it’s pet friendly.

The hotel has also partnered with health and wellness consultants, Egg of the Universe, to offer workouts and yoga routines through the in-room digital compendium or television, and if you need a yoga mat, the front desk can bring one up for free.

Socialising at Kimpton

Kimpton Sydney will host a daily social hour from 5pm where you can mingle with fellow guests over cheese platters and a changing menu of complimentary drinks ranging from boutique wines and spirits to the hotel’s signature Margot cocktail.

The social hour will take place in a variety of the hotel’s venues including the 1930’s style lobby, the mezzanine art gallery or at the rooftop bar by the pool.

Leading Australian chef Luke Mangan will headline the hotel’s eponymous ‘Luke’s Kitchen’ all-day restaurant.

The acclaimed culinary whiz is well-known to many ET readers through his work in shaping the original business class menu of Virgin Australia, and of course his Glass Brasserie restaurant at Hilton Sydney on George Street.

The plush velvet lounges of the Wilmot Bar is where the hotel will showcase its extensive cocktail menu; if your passions include craft beer, Kimpton Sydney will also offer a series of scheduled ‘in residence’ bottomless brunch sessions with local craft distillers and brewers.
