Virgin Australia unleashes double Status Credits and Points promo

Virgin Australia wants to help travellers shake off those mid-year winter blues with a generous offering of double Status Credits or Points.

It’s a deal that can send Velocity frequent flyers rocketing up the tiers to Gold and Platinum, or perhaps get them closer to that next reward flight or upgrade to business class.

And while bookings must be made within the next two weeks, through to Thursday July 18 2024, the flights you book can stretch any time between August 1 2024 to June 27 2025.

There’s just one caveat: this promo is available only to selected Velocity frequent flyers, on an invitation-only basis. Eligible Velocity members have already started receiving the offer via email.

If you’re on the list, you have until midnight (EST) on July 18 to lock in as many flights as you can, for travel as far out as midnight on June 27 next year.

To put your potential haul into perspective, a one-way business class flight from Sydney to Brisbane or Melbourne would normally earn 55 status credits and 5 points per $1 spent.

For a typical $379 fare between those cities, you’d rake in 110 status credits or 3,790 Velocity Points (versus just 1,895 without the promo).

Given you need 500 Status Credits to tick your Velocity tier over to Gold, or just 400 to keep Velocity Gold membership for another year, just three return trips would have you earning over and above what’s required.

And Gold is often considered to be the sweet spot for Velocity, including perks such as lounge access, priority treatment at check-in and for boarding, along with reciprocal status at Hilton or IHG hotels.

The Velocity promotion applies across Virgin’s Australia-wide network and short-range international flights; partner airlines such as ANA, Etihad Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways and United Airlines are not eligible, meaning you can only count on the standard amount of Velocity Points and Status Credits there.

So someone like me who will have 1854 status credits in 5 months doesn't get the opportunity to get extra velocity points, forgetting about the status credit?

I spoke to quick, I must apologise I got offered bonus points but no bonus status credits

That is a dicey move; I wonder how this will be seen by the regulators

They should have had this open to all travellers, I think it will back fire.

I agree; it creates a have-and-had-not culture, the ones that acheive and the ones that have a free ride.

If they only knew what I knew and how incompetent they are in the middleware.

I used the triple status-credits offer (and I will easily retain Platinum as a result) and did NOT receive this offer. I wonder if it's targeted at those who didn't use the triple SC offer?

I did not use the triple status credits and was also not offered this.

Currently Platinum but still need 4 more points to retain by this time next month.

We pick up 10 SC's/month just from Coles FlyBuys.  You might have to do a 'SC-run' on a short, qualifying and cheap flight (e.g. ADL-MEL, SYD-BNE/BNK/DBO/NTL, etc.) if you don't want to lose Platinum status?  Just remember SimmoOz007 that whilst 'Lite' fares earn some SCs and Points, they do NOT earn sectors.

Sibelius, when was the last triple (or double) status credits run you refer to?

Trying to establish a possible SC's pattern.

I'm silver with 17 credits and I wasn't eligible for this. Guess I'm sticking with Qantas then.

I have 3.5k status credits 3… months into my membership year. I have not receive the offer. In fact if I go to the link (readily available) and try to login I’m told: “Sorry, you’re not eligible for this offer.”

Makes me wonder if someone with 3.5k status credits is in any way acknowledged by the people at VA these days🤔 #retoricalquestion

So you earned 3.5K SC in 3 months???? If so how many were earned on partner airlines? they don't count for this promo so maybe they discounted partner flights.

Wait for QF to try this as well. Locked in loyal traveller with the airline, no offer. On the fence, invited.

Zero reward for years of loyalty!

I'm Platinum, and I'm only 2 months into my new membership year and I haven't earnt many SC's yet this year. I got the offer. Makes you wonder what the selection criteria is.

Keywords here, "Loyal Customers Locked Out" as a 3800 status credit person, I feel disillusioned about the whole VA experience of people who earn over 1800 status credits. Just no respect for there bread and butter customers.

Unequivocally unfair . Segregating members is a dire reflection on the Velocity management team .As it would seem those most loyal are disregarded .

I must admit I am a little disappointed as a Platinum member being excluded from this offer. It sure makes me question my loyalty moving forward.
