UPDATE: Qantas axes more flights from new 'strike' timetable

UPDATE | Qantas has pulled an additional 20 flights per week from its just-revamped 'strike schedule', with coast-to-coast services to and from Perth being the most heavily hit.

The cuts come due to the grounding of two more aircraft on top of the five which were hangared this week.

A Qantas spokesman told Australian Business Traveller that the new timetable would remain in place "for at least a month", although the airline is unable to detail which additional flights will be affected, apart from observing that these will be "mainly between eastern states and Perth".

This brings the total tally of cancelled flights up to around 130 per week.

PREVIOUS | Qantas' new 'strike timetable' comes into effect today, Monday, October 17, with the airline cutting 110 flights per week due to ongoing industrial action.

Qantas says the timetable will remain in place "for the next month due to Qantas grounding five aircraft as a result of a backlog of maintenance caused by industrial action by the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association."

"The union has had overtime bans in place since the start of September as well as an official instruction for its members to go-slow on day to day work" the airline said. "These bans are still in place and the union has indicated they will remain in place until at least Christmas."

not to buy into either sides argument, but anyone else think possibly that QF could be in part using the situation to boost load factors by carrying the same amount of people on less flights?

personally as the current situation stands the only one winning is Virgin as more people (even the most loyal of QF flyers) will take the chance to get on the on time flight with their baggage and no nasty PA annoucements that virgin are now offering in contrast to the sh*t show currently at Qantas. I see only positives for Virgin because of the strike and honestly think this is the begging of the end for the Q.

No point in cutting capacity if they're still paying for it. The only reason they'd cut capacity to push up load factors is to save money (ie having to pay less staff because they need less manpower to maintain/staff 10 planes as opposed to 15 planes) and make more money but their costs are remaining the same - they have to keep paying all their workers the same amount regardless whether the plane is flying or stored awaiting maintenance.

This isn't the beginning of the end for QF. I can list a dozen airlines off the top of my head who have been in the exact same situation (most recent example that comes to mind is the BA strikes) and they're still alive and kicking (and going from strength to strength). Don't forget that not that long ago DJ was under attack after it's IT systems died and tens of thousands were left stranded. This will blow over and business will resume as per normal before much longer. I think if the situation was any different we'd be seeing QF keep all flights, but 'charter' JQ aircraft to cover them (the unions would love for this to happen from a publicity point of view though, so no way...)
