Cautionary Tale on Qantas Bonus Status Credit Promotions

From time to time, Qantas has promotions where you get 50% or even double bonus status credits on flight bookings within a certain prescribed period for travel within another prescribed period.

As with everything in life these days, do read the fine print. Qantas often takes 6 to 8 weeks to credit your account with the status credits, and if your membership year rolls over during that period, those status credits may end up being useless to you for tier retention or promotion purposes, for when they are eventually credited, they are credited as at the date(s) of travel.

Normally, I find despite the T&Cs the bonus SCs credit a couple of business days or so after the standard credits.

They're not useless if they take weeks to credit. If they were needed for retaining your status for the year in which you flew then that should be automatically fixed up and your status adjusted accordingly. If you'd already retained your status and couldn't level up further for the year in which you flew the bonus credits still count towards your lifetime tally.

I had the 50% offer from back in (I think) July for travel before November - I banged out 4 trips and the bonus SC's have only this week appeared in my account...

I would have thought that the SCs earned on a flight and the bonuses that come attached to those flights would fall within the membership year that the flight was taken - not when they happen to fall into your account. Unfortunately, I can't find anything on the QF site to confirm this..

They do count and don't go to waste. I had that situation last year... bonus status credits were credited in early Jan. My membership year finishes every December and I travelled on the 31st (bit risky!). It first said I was still silver as I had not met the 700 SC, then in early Jan those extra status credits were on my account and was Gold.

So maybe check with Qantas? That wouldn't be an issue, I also was able to use the 50 extra SC towards my current membership year which will allow me to retain my status.

Thanks Silvyvc. That makes it pretty clear. Although I suspected the points would be tied to the date of the flight, I was a little worried because I also have a critical status flight coming up just before the end of my membership year.

The one thing they don’t contribute to for sure is the status bonuses after multiples of 500SCs.

Kind of on topic, Qantas SCs are based on GMT time. What I mean is that if your anniversary year ends on say 31 January, then a flight taken before 11:59pm GMT on 31 January will count towards that year. It will appear on your FF statement as the Australian time in the new anniversary, but the credit will go on the previous year. Happened to me earlier in the year based on an AA flight I took in the USA -- which luckily meant I retained Platinum.

Earn, both points and SC, are based on scheduled departure time, in local time, of the flight in question. Not any globally set timezone.
an 11pm departure from LAX on Jan 31 will count earn to Jan 31, even though it is already Feb 1 in both Australia and GMT.

So far I have not had any issues with close dates, double credits etc however will be testing the best laid plans with my son very close to his membership year on flights to, around and from UK/EU. All things being equal he will qualify for P...maybe...!!

Some old promos did contribute towards the status bonuses, but that has been 'enhanced' so now new promos don't.

Also be aware that double status credits are only awarded on sectors flown with Qantas metal. Even if you’re on a QF flight number the double SCs will not be credited if it’s actually an Emirates or AA (or other) aircraft.

I got dudded this year purchasing open jaw SYD-MUC / TXL-SYD (both ways via DXB) on Qantas under double status credit promotion. As it turned out I was on EK metal DXB-SYD and the only sector I was actually on a Qantas aircraft was SYD-DXB ... so that’s the only sector that got credited the double SCs for SYD-DXB.

Pays to read the fine print!

The metal doesn't matter, just as long as you book under the QF flight number.

While we are sharing DSC cautions, when booking under one of these promos do not use any vouchers you may have from previously cancelled bookings. They are not counted by QF as a new booking and therefore don't qualify for the promo SC's

It depends on the specific promotion. Some have limits on which codeshares can be used for the bonus SC.
