I would suggest the Grand Hyatt Taipei. It's only a 3 minute walk or so from the station and as an added bonus, right near the Taipei 101!

The Caesar Park is right across the road from Taipei Main Station and has basement access into the mall and station. Also a short walk from the Taoyuan Airport MRT terminus. It's mid-range, and looks a bit tired on the outside but inside is modern. For a bit more upmarket, the Sheraton is one stop along from Taipei Main at Shandao Temple station.

The W is fantastic. Good for sightseeing too - close to Taipei 101 and elephant mountain walk.

If you're wanting to stay near the airport I can recommend the Novotel: have stayed there a few times myself on overnight transits and found it acceptable and easy to access via the free MRT (no fare is charged between the airport and the 'airport hotel' stop which is near the hotel's main entrance), but while it's well-connected to public transport, if you're staying more than a night you'd probably want to stay in town.

The Westin Taipei

Regrettably this place closes on Dec. 31st ...it was very well regarded over the years.

'if you can afford it' ...the W's prices are extortionate ...

W is good for a drink and a meal. I think the prices to stay are not good value for money in a city such as Taipei. The Shangri La in Taipei is one of their flagship properties and is outstanding, especially the Horizon Club rooms with a view of Taipei 101. It's one of their better Horizon Clubs too, with a great selection of food and a bartender making fantastic cocktails to order each evening.

For something different - the Play Design Hotel is also fantastic. Small, with limited facilities, but each room is uniquely decorated and fitted out with local Taiwanese materials by local designers, it's luxurious, and in a great part of town to live like a local. The staff are lovely too and can't do enough for you.

I stayed at Hotel East Taipei, Taipei a month ago. Small rooms, but well designed. In a good location and only 5 minute walk from a metro stop.

Mandarian Oriental - just stayed there as got a very good deal, they were offering a third night free. It’s near two metro stations and rooms are enormous.

For business travellers, try the Grand Hyatt Taipei. They are in this market specifically and know what to do and expect! Plus the rooms are recently renovated and nicely located as well!

Try the Caesar Park Hotel Banqiao. It's amazing.

Landis Hotel is a personal favorite in Taipei. Very Art Deco. May not be for everyone. Mrs Ourmanin hails from Taiwan and we find ourselves heading back there a fair bit. There is also an absolutely fabulous teppanyaki restaurant a very short (3min) walk up the road.
