Marriott International will open a new W Melbourne hotel by 2020, nestled on Collins Street in the city’s bustling CBD as part of a $1 billion mixed-use luxury development.
The hotel itself will feature 294 guestrooms including 40 suites and an ‘Extreme Wow Suite’ – the brand’s own version of a traditional Presidential Suite – along with a bar and restaurant, a day spa, fitness centre and an indoor heated swimming pool.
There’s also over 1,200 square metres of event and meeting space for large conferences and smaller meetings alike, with the broader development featuring premium office, retail and commercial space across two towers, linked at the top by a residential bridge.
A broad footprint will allow hotel guests to enter the property from William Street, Market Street, Collins Street and Flinders Lane for maximum convenience.
“Melbourne, with its vibrant music, emerging fashion and bold street art, is a destination made for the W brand,” said Anthony Ingham, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide.
“Located in the epicentre of the city, W Melbourne will embody the city’s creative spirit while showcasing the brand’s bold and energetic take on luxury,” Ingham continues.
W Melbourne is the second W hotel bound for Australia’s shores with the W Brisbane property gearing up for its own opening in early 2018, and follows the recent opening of the W Las Vegas hotel with new W Shanghai and W Tel Aviv properties also on the way.

It's good to see they are putting a W hotel in the pants-scraper.
I think it will be a great addition to the city and in a nifty location.

"W Melbourne is the second W hotel bound for Australia's shores with the W Brisbane property gearing up for its own opening in early 2018 .."
Slight correction. Actually, the Melbourne W will be the third W hotel bound for Australia's shores. The Sydney W at Darling Harbour is due to open 2019 according to https://www.executivetraveller.com/w-hotel-sydney-to-open-2019.

W Sydney no longer appears on the chain's list of planned and upcoming hotels, which could suggest a delay, possible cancellation or a re-brand. Without clarifying which scenario applies, advice direct from W Hotels this morning was that W Melbourne would indeed be the second W Hotel to open in Australia, as reported.

Thanks for the clarification, Chris! It would indeed be interesting to know why such a major project in Sydney appears to be subject to revision, of sorts.

Well the building that the W was to be in in Sydney (the Ribbon) isn't scheduled to open until mid-2020 (pushed back from 2019). They've only started demolishing the old building on the site (the Imax).

Might be because the original W hotel at Woolloomooloo was killed off a few years ago - was never a great location...maybe Sydney isn't ready for another W?

Shame to hear SYD might be on the chopping block. Was very excited for that property, despite its pretty inferior location between two elevated highways.
