Qatar status match gives Qantas perks to Virgin frequent flyers

A rare status match from Qantas partner Qatar Airways unlocks Qantas perks for Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum members.

Qatar status match gives Qantas perks to Virgin frequent flyers

What's the next best thing to a Qantas status match for Virgin Australia frequent flyers? It'd have to be a status match from a Qantas partner airline which gives Velocity Silver, Gold or Platinum members the same core perks as if you were a Qantas Silver, Gold or Platinum.

That's the offer from Qatar Airways, which is a Qantas partner by virtue of their shared membership to the global Oneworld airline alliance.

As a result, holding status in Qatar Airways' Privilege Club rewards program delivers the essential benefits – such as lounge access, priority treatment at the airport and a higher checked luggage allowance – as enjoyed by a Qantas Silver, Gold or Platinum frequent flyer.

So if you're a Virgin Australia Velocity Gold or Platinum member who happens to be flying with Qantas, you'll have access to the Qantas lounges – and beyond that, if you're on any other Oneworld airline such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific or JAL, you'll have access to their lounges as well.

There's no cost for this status match, and there's no catch – you won't even need to take a Qatar Airways flight, just submit your Velocity details to Qatar Airways.

But you'll need to move fast, because this one-timer offer closes at 11.59pm on Wednesday May 20 (Doha time), which is 7am Thursday May 21 on Australia's east coast.

Read on for all the details.

With Virgin Australia now in administration, Velocity Frequent Flyers find it hard to escape the feeling that a large dark cloud is hanging over their head – but this cloud has a silver, gold or even platinum lining.

Qantas partner Qatar Airways is now offering to match the status of all Velocity Frequent Flyers to the equivalent tier in the Gulf airline's own Privilege Club rewards program – and as Qatar Airways is a Qantas partner

You won't 'lose' your treasured Velocity status: you'll simply gain another shiny card for your wallet, ready to whip out and wave about once travel returns.

And that won't even have to be international travel, although Qatar Airways remains one of the few international airlines connecting Australia with the rest of the world.

Unlike Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai, for example, its Doha hub hasn't banned passengers in transit, and even now the airline itself continues to fly to 16 destinations in Europe alone.

If all that sounds appealing – and we're betting it does – you'll want to step lively, because this one-timer offer closes at 11.59pm on Wednesday May 20 (Doha time), which is 7am Thursday May 21 on Australia's east coast.

Benefits of the Qatar Airways Velocity status match

As Qatar Airways belongs to the Oneworld alliance, its frequent flyer perks extend to fellow Oneworld member Qantas – meaning that your freshly-minted Privilege Club Silver, Gold or Platinum status will pack the same core privileges as if you were Qantas Silver, Gold or Platinum.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club status unlocks access to domestic Qantas Clubs and Qantas Business lounges.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club status unlocks access to domestic Qantas Clubs and Qantas Business lounges.

And yes, that includes lounge access: a flash of your Qatar Airways Privilege Club Gold card will get into all domestic Qantas Club lounges, plus Qantas international business lounges (once overseas travel resumes).

Likewise, the Qatar Airway Privilege Club Platinum card opens the doors at domestic Qantas Business lounges plus Qantas First lounges for international trips.

Use your Velocity Platinum membership to gain entry to the hallowed Qantas First lounges.

Privilege Club Gold is also your ticket into the business class lounges of other Oneworld member airlines – including British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines – while the Privilege Club Platinum card does the same for any Oneworld first class lounge.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Platinum status is your passport into Cathay Airways' elegant first class lounges.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club Platinum status is your passport into Cathay Airways' elegant first class lounges.

Other status benefits include:

  • checking in at the business class or even first class desk, regardless of the travel class you're flying in
  • enjoying a higher checked baggage allowance, and having those bags tagged for priority handling
  • being among the first to board (and claim your overhead bin space) through priority boarding
  • and using the express lane for security and immigration at selected airports
Another local perk of Qatar Airways status is to zip through priority lanes for security.
Another local perk of Qatar Airways status is to zip through priority lanes for security.

It gets better: your gratis status with Qatar Airways Privilege Club will be valid for 12 months, meaning that could could enjoy all the privileges and perks through to May 2021.

And it gets better again: to keep that status through to as far as May 2022, status match recipients will need collect only half as many 'Qpoints' as other members would.

How Qatar Airways and Velocity status tiers compare

Apart from the entry-level Burgundy tier, the Qatar Airways Privilege Club has three core levels:  Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Four flavours for frequent flyers.
Four flavours for frequent flyers.

These conveniently line up against Virgin Australia's Velocity Frequent Flyer Silver, Gold and Platinum status tiers (and the sound-alike ones of Qantas Frequent Flyer, if you hop a flight on the Red Roo.)

In all likelihood your Velocity Silver, Gold or Platinum status will be matched directly to Qatar Airways Privilege Club Silver, Gold and Platinum – although the fine print on this promotion says the decision "remains at the discretion of Privilege Club management; Privilege Club reserves the right to decide on the corresponding tier."

How to apply for a Qatar Airways Velocity status match

You'll need to be a member of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club – signing up is fast, free and done at qmiles.com.

Also, take a photo or a scan of your Velocity Frequent Flyer membership card

Qatar Airways requests that your status match application also include the last two months of statements for your current airline – but given that the last two months have probably seen you doing no flying, we suggest you go back to a few months from late last year or early this year when you were travelling quite a bit.

Add those to your application, with a covering note explaining how your recent travel plans have been scuppered by COVID-19.

Bundle everything up and email it to [email protected], with the subject line “Privilege Club Status Match", and also include your new Qatar Airways Privilege Club membership number in that email.

Remember: this has to be done before 7am on May 21, Australian eastern standard time.

Your membership status match request will be reviewed, and approval sent within 10 business days.

How to keep your Qatar Airways status to 2022

Qatar Airways Privilege Club status is determined by how many Qpoints you earn during your membership year – and that bar has been substantially lowered for successful status matchers.

During your complimentary gratis status period you'll need yo earn the following number of Qpoints to keep your Privilege Club tier status for another 12 months:

  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club Silver: 75 Qpoints (usually 150)
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club Gold: 150 Qpoints (usually 300)
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club Platinum: 300 Qpoints (usually 600)

In general, the more you spend on your ticket, the more Qpoints you’ll earn. This applies to both the class of travel you book and the distance you fly.

But with Qpoints able to be earned on the flights of Oneworld member airlines, including even domestic Qantas hops, this makes it easier to slowly work your way up the ladder.

That said, in order to retain your Qatar Airways Privilege Club status you'll also need to have clocked up at least 20% of your Qpoints and "flown four sectors" on "flights either marketed or operated by Qatar Airways", the airline says.

I wonder what Qantas thinks of this status match. Qantas lounges are already over crowded but if I was Qantas I would offer VA Platinum and VA Double Platinums (1800 Status Credits) status matches as well.

I wish Qatar would offer this status match to Qantas Platinums. I'd take them up on it and switch next year's international travel to them.

Will be interesting to see how this goes. I applied yesterday before reading the advice on this article to - "we suggest you go back to a few months from late last year or early this year when you were travelling quite a bit". If I get the Platinum match I'd have no hesitation in switching to Qatar for my overseas travel when we (hopefully) return to some kind or normal! As an aside, I hope Melbourne gets the new QSuites!

Does that mean flying QF metal on a QR ticket with QR code will do it for you? Do QR put their code on any QF domestic flights?

Qatar's website says the following:

In addition to the above tier qualification and retention criteria, you will need to have earned at least 20% of your Qpoints or have flown 4 sectors (within 12 months prior to retention) or 8 sectors (within 24 months prior to retention) on flights either marketed* or operated** by Qatar Airways.

*Marketed refers to the airline whose flight number is specified on your booking.

**Operated refers to the airline you are flying with.

In short, you need to fly at least 4 flights on Qatar a year in order to qualify for tier extension.

QR do codeshare with Qantas on domestic routes but under QF flight number. Also, you can only get Qpoints and Qmiles on QF-operated flights if you have an international segment under this booking. E.g. if you fly Mel-Syd-HNL on QF, you'll get points for all segments, but if you only fly Mel-Syd, you'd be better off putting that flight onto your QFF. I got this info from a Qatar Support team when I was trying to credit my domestic flights onto PC. Hope that helps.

It's very odd – the status match promo page at https://www.qatarairways.com/en/Privilege-Club/tier-match.html says "This promotion has now ended", yet the terms & conditions still specify that " Members who wish to receive the status match should provide the documents on or before 20 May 2020, 11.59 PM Doha time" – which is the same as as outlined in the article, and equates to 7am 21 May here in Sydney. So it looks like it's closed, but the T&Cs beg to differ.

Suggest ET could reach out to Qatar's media team and seek an assurance to put our minds at ease?

T&C's (still visible on the site) clearly state the timing deadline as per article. There's none of the usual "unless terminated earlier" jargon and thus not much riggle room for the airline.

This is great, I have Qantas Gold but Velocity Platinum, I've applied for QR Platinum, fingers crossed that QR comes through because using the domestic Qantas Business Lounge and the international Qantas First lounges at SYD and SIN would be a win for me. Also would be keen to try QR for SYD-LHR, as QR Platinum in business class you actually get into QR's first class lounge now.

When you make a booking, you need to put your FF program details there. If you decide to put QR details, you'll have lounge access and priority boarding but won't earn points or miles on domestic-only segments. You can't double dip.

Hi.

I have applied for a Platinum Velocity match. They have emailed me back twice insisting on a copy of a paper statement for last two months including name, membership number and all details. They will not accept screen shots. I contacted velocity and they have asked me to email a request for statements. Anyone else got a solution ?

This reeks of Qantas' last widely publicised points bonanza a few months ago, which promised the world and delivered nothing to 97% of patrons.

This is an opportunistic database grab, with Qantas a parasite along for the ride.

BTW, are you on Qantas' payroll?

Wouldn't put it past Qantas to be behind putting Qatar up to it. Grab loyal virgin customers when they are at their weakest. And Qantas can remain arms length to the whole thing, avoid the ACCC eye and public scrutiny.

Still no response to my email. Anyone had any luck yet?

I got an email notification advising me that their response is within my "Contact Centre" tab when I log into my Privilege Account online. Maybe check your actual accounts online as they may have replied that way but not sent the email (or it ended up in your spam folder). I received a response where I was asked to provide most recent 2 months of "paper statements", not a screenshot as I'd originally supplied. They also asked for other information which I'd already supplied (photo of platinum card with my details on it). Given I don't receive paper statements, or an electronic version of it, I've asked them as of 21st May how I should proceed as well as re-sending the photograph of my Velocity Platinum card. They are yet to get back to me. I really hope I can get the match, so hopefully there will be some workaround to the "paper statements" requirement. I'll keep you all informed as to how I get along.

I finally got a formatted statement from Virgin (not a screen shot) and sent it to Qatar yesterday as they would not accept my screen shots. I had an email today asking that I resend all the documents previously sent and that they would only be accepted if the details matches the exact name and address on my Privilege Card membership. Seems like they are looking for ways not to honour the match. Firstly they demanded a Virgin Statement on paper and now they are nit picking the details.

Can we just call this out for what it it? A number of Velocity FF (including myself Platinum) have submitted all the required documents and yet no one seems to be getting any status matched ? I too have only received the generic email advising that my application is being reviewed. I only sent screenshots but have yet to be contacted about that particular issue - although I have no idea why QATAR think that this is an issue. I did wonder why they even needed to see my activity given that nobody is flying right now. I also think it is unlikely that I will be flying with them in an attempt to maintain my status (if I ever get it) given the CEO's comments that passengers will need to wear masks, gloves and possibly even face shields!
