Win one million Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer points

Not to be outdone by Qantas' recent give-away of one million Qantas Points to ten lucky members of its frequent flyer scheme, Virgin Australia is joining the "one million points give-away" gang.

Entering the contest is pretty straight-forward: just sign up to receive email alerts from Virgin Australia Holidays on the airline's latest holiday packages and events.

The promo runs through to July 31 – miss that cut-off date and you'll still get the emails but not a shot at the million points.

Interestingly, the contest Terms & Conditions specifies the "Total prize pool is 1 (one) million Velocity Frequent Flyer points valued at $27,500.00 (including GST)", which means that Virgin Australia pegs its points at 2.75c each, at least for this exercise.

(By comparison, the Qantas million points competition valued Qantas points at 2.28c each.)

I love the T and c's of the competition

Australian Business Traveller should compare different Q and VA products redeemed for points, when I checked out which points are better last week Q wasn't worth anything like 2.28 cents more like  0.67 cents.

The value of points depends entirely on what you're trading them for - the values suggested by Virgin and Qantas in their contests are purely there as a requirement of the terms & conditions. For example, we did the article below in 2011 and found the purchasing power of a Qantas point ranged from 1.1 to 1.3 cents for an award flight booking to as low as 0.3 cents when shopping at the Qantas frequent flyer online store.
